Year-End Reflection

Reflecting on this year’s coaching conversations, I noticed  two questions appeared repeatedly: “What matters to you?” and “What are you good at?”

What matters to you is the values you honor.

What you are good at is about your strengths and your brand.

When we work on what we are good at, we are inspired and productive; otherwise, we are miserable and overwhelmed.

Combining these two questions may reveal misalignment. You might leverage your strengths at work; however, you are not living your values. What’s your option then? A good reflection for the end of the year.

Now, review the two questions with leaders. Leadership is typically grounded in values. When a leader demonstrates integrity and makes decisions aligned with their vision, they gain trust and followers.

When a leader focuses on their own self-interest, their leadership won’t last because of conflicts of values. For example, “don’t rock the boat” is a way of valuing job security – this self-interest may conflict with the company’s interests or humanity. What kind of leader you choose to be is also a good year-end reflection.
