Using Plain English to Explain AI and Generative AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a subfield within computer science. It simulates human intelligence with machines.  The AI model is a program or algorithm that is trained by a certain data set to make decisions.

Generative AI is a type of AI that generates new content. Different Generative AI models exist for different tasks; such as generating text, pictures, or videos.

Popular generative AI modes are as follows

⚡Natural language – an example is chatGTP, which has a large-scale capability to generate human-like text. And they don’t understand the text they write.

⚡Text-to-image – Three main services/models are Midjourney(macOS), DALL-E(Windows), and Stable Diffusion(Linux). Filmmakers, marketing, and art are early adopters.

⚡Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) – This improves generators’ ability to create realistic data. For example, Audi uses them for wheel design.

⚡VAE and Anomaly Detection – It is trained with normal datasets and used to identify instances that deviate from the normal data. For example, Uber uses them to detect fraudulent transactions.

You don’t need to know all these technical details as a user or business leader. Like using a mobile payment app, you use it to pay without knowing the technology behind it.

If a computer can’t replace your job, there is no fear that AI will replace you.
