Can AI Replace Your Job?

Bill Gates shared his perspective on AI’s impact on employment on The Tonight Show last week. He identified three jobs  (software programming, energy systems, and biological sciences) that are unlikely to be replaced by AI due to its limitations in handling the complexity and nuance in human judgment and decision-making.

It’s important to recognize that many other professions face similar complexity. And, what is it beneath human judgment and decision-making complexity?

As a coach, I work with my clients on discovering what drives their behavior, grounds their beliefs, informs their assumptions, and creates their narratives, because all of these factors impact their judgments and decision-making. The complexity and nuance are beyond the programming projects that I worked on for many years.

The Wheel of Awareness meditation from Dan Siegel gives a whole picture.  (see graph below)

  • The hub represents core awareness—the experience of knowing
  • The rim encompasses everything that captures our attention, including our five senses, the body’s internal signals, mental activities, relational sense, and the world around us.

Dan Siegel Wheel of Awareness

This sums up the complexity and nuance of human judgment and decision-making, as we operate daily between our senses, emotions, body sensations, and interactions with others, and the external world, encompassing all living beings and natural impacts. Can AI replace my work? I don’t think so.
