My daughter got a brain scan from Dr. Amen’s clinic in Tacoma, WA.
The brain scan uses SPECT ( Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography) technology, which is a sophisticated nuclear medicine study of cerebral blood flow and, indirectly, brain activity (metabolism).
The SPECT shows the active and inactive parts of one’s brain when she was concentrating and when she was relaxing. The result shown from the scan is very consistent with my daughter’s observation of herself. The doctor who did the scan debrief also recommended some medication modification based on the scan result.
I would recommend the test to people who are taking medication for brain chemical imbalance. When you can see how your brain works, it’s easier to decide the treatment needed.
I know some parents are very hesitated to give their kids medication. Be aware that brain chemical imbalance kids tend to self-medicate themselves if they are not treated with medication.
